Getting useful results from a calculator
What to check before you rely on an estimate.

Start with the right figures
Use the amount you actually plan to borrow or save. Check whether a field asks for a monthly or annual figure. The numbers filled in when a calculator opens are examples, not suggested amounts.
Read the assumptions
A result is only useful if the assumptions fit your situation. Every calculator explains its scope below the form. For example, a repayment estimate can leave out fees, and an investment illustration can leave out inflation.
Change one thing at a time
Try a different term, contribution or rate, then calculate again. Keeping the other figures the same makes it easier to see what changed the result.
Check the real terms
Use the estimate to understand the numbers. Check a provider’s actual terms or an official calculation before committing to a financial decision.
