How this is calculated

2026/27 thresholds. Assumes UK employment, one loan plan and the same salary in each monthly pay period. Monthly deductions are rounded down to whole pounds. Excludes concurrent plans, overseas repayments, bonuses, Self Assessment and final balance adjustments.

Calculation method

Monthly deduction = floor(max(0, monthly salary − monthly threshold) × repayment rate)

The published monthly thresholds used here are £2,241 for Plan 1, £2,448 for Plan 2, £2,816 for Plan 4, £2,083 for Plan 5 and £1,750 for postgraduate loans. Undergraduate plans use 9% of earnings above the threshold; postgraduate loans use 6%. The annual result is twelve equal monthly deductions.

Worked example

A salary of £30,000 gives £2,500 monthly pay. On Plan 2, £52 is above the £2,448 monthly threshold. Nine per cent is £4.68, rounded down to a £4 monthly deduction, or £48 over twelve identical pay periods.

Common questions

Can I calculate an undergraduate and postgraduate loan together?

Not in this version. Select a single plan only. Combined plans have additional repayment rules explained in the GOV.UK source.

Does the balance I owe affect the result?

The model calculates income-based deductions, not a balance repayment schedule. It does not cap the final payment to your remaining balance or estimate the loan’s write-off date.

What if I receive a bonus or work overseas?

Unequal pay periods, overseas earnings and Self Assessment can require different calculations. This estimate assumes UK monthly employment with equal pay.
